Dealing with Dog Lice

All Pet Lovers,

A dog’s best friend is an informed owner.  Read on for Dog Health Tips.

What Is Dog Lice?

dog-lice

Dog lice are flat, gray, wingless parasites that are about a twelfth of an inch long. Dog lice are hardly move at all, its only affect the dogs in your home and are not capable of surviving off of humans.

Signs that your dog is infected are heavy & intense scratching, and irritation that often results in bald patches.

How Can Your Dog Come Into Contact With Dog Lice?

Dogs that live in a clean environment and receive regular grooming have a slim chance of contacting them, while  poorly nourished dogs are more likely to attract and retain lice.

But… healthy dogs do still come in contact with these varmints and it is possible for one dog to spread fleas to another dog.  Since dog fleas can’t jump, there has to be physical contact between the dogs in order to pass them on.

The most common places for dogs to contract lice would be dog parks, walking trails, grooming instruments, and other dog’s bedding.

What are the Most Effective Natural Treatments for Dog Lice?

Here are a few recommended natural treatments:

  1. Bathe your dog daily with a good natural dog shampoo.  Leave the lather on the hair for ten minutes.
  2. After bathing your dog, try applying a natural lemon rinse* (highly recommended!), also effective for the treatment of fleas and ticks.  This lemon rinse will help to slowly kill of the remaining eggs.
  3. Removing the eggs attached to the hair follicles is the most difficult part of eliminating them.  Try rubbing mayonnaise into the hair of your dog and massaging with your fingertips.  This may help to loosen the eggs and then you can follow up with a nice firm shampooing to wash the eggs down the drain.

Slice a lemon (score and leave the peel on) and pour 1 cup of boiling water over it. Let sit overnight- this water can then be sprayed on your dog. This will kill fleas and temporarily prevent new ones from taking up residence on your dog.

Keep These Foods Away From Your Doggie

Like most dog owners, I love to pamper my furry little pet by feeding her some human foods. There have been a few occasions when I’ve seen her vomited yellow bile, but after that she seemed fine.

Due to this, I’ve done lots of research on this, and surprisingly realized that some foods that are fine for humans can make the dogs sick… or even cause death!

Remember these foods should never be given to your pet… Do not feed these to your Fido!!

  • Chocolate!! - Chocolate contains theobromine, where it is toxic to dogs and affects their heart and nervous system. Two squares of dark chocolate are enough poison to kill a labrador.
  • Grapes and Raisins - Grapes and raisins create havoc with your dog’s kidneys and digestive system.
  • Onions & Garlics - Onions cause the breakdown of a dog’s red blood cells, which deprives his cells of much-needed oxygen.
  • Yeast dough - Active yeast found in raw bread dough releases alcohol as it grows, ingestion of yeast can cause fatal damage.
  • Pitted Fruits (Peaches, Pears, Cherries, and Apricots) -  The pits of these fruits contain small doses of cyanide, which can be fatal to smaller dogs.
  • Caffeinated Beverages - Similar to the effects of chocolate, caffeine can negatively impact your dog’s heart rate, causing seizures or heart attacks.
  • Macadamia Nuts – A small amount of macadamia nuts can cause fever, irregular heartbeat, seizures, or mild paralysis.

Other foods that can be poisonous to dogs are tomato, avocados, mushrooms,  and raw fish.

Poison symptoms can vary greatly, ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to loss of appetite, frequent urination, fever, or exhaustion. If you even suspect your dog has consumed some foods (especially Chocolate!! ) can be poisonous to him, take him to an animal hospital immediately.

A healthy diet is very important to a dog, so if you want your furry friend to stay fit and healthy, remember which foods are bad for him and monitor what he eats.
