Dogs sleep about 14 hours a day, so selecting a comfortable dog bed for your dog should be as important as selecting one for your self. One should take into consideration age, size, durability of the dog bed, cost, and a pet’s sleeping habits – i.e. does he usually curl up or stretch out, when making a choice.

There are various beds to choose from:-

Nest Dog Bed – Nest beds work well for any kind of dog that likes to curl up or lean back.dogbednest1

Donut Dog Bed – Donut dog beds provide a rim or edge around the bed that is pillow-soft bolster that lets your dog really curl up and sink in.

Cooling Dog Bed – Cooling dog beds are filled with water or a gel-like liquid.  Though cooling beds are great for any type of dog, breeds with a tendency to overheat will benefit the most especially Bulldogs.

When purchasing a bed for your pet, make sure it is sized properly. The bed should be big enough to hold your pet comfortably, but not too big so as to gather unnecessary space.

Top 5 Grooming Basics

Brushing

Brushing or combing will help keep your pet’s hair in healthy condition by removing dirt, keeping his skin clean and irritant-free. A dog’s minimum brushing needs depend on hair type.

  • Long-haired dogs usually require daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling of hair.
  • Medium-haired dogs may be prone to matting and tangles and should be brushed at least weekly.
  • Short-haired dogs can typically go up to a month in-between brushing.

Bathing

Use a mild shampoo that’s safe to use on dogs. Avoid getting shampoo in your dog’s eyes. Rinse well. Blow dry your dog after his bath and brush his fur when it is dry.

Tip: Brush your dog out before the bath begins. Be sure to remove any tangles or mats, as these are harder to deal with once your dog is wet.

Nail Trimming

Use nail clippers that are meant for dogs, do not use scissors. Hold your dog’s paw in one hand, and the clippers in the other. Place the clippers over the nail and clip only the tip of the nail. Avoid clipping the vein.

Ear Care

All dogs should have their ears checked periodically. Dogs with droop ears are especially susceptible to fungus and bacterial infections and should be checked at least weekly.

Tip: If your dog scratches his ears often, take a sample of anything in the ear to the vet and have your vet check it for ear mites.

Haircuts

Dogs with continuously growing hair, such as the Poodle or Shih Tzu, typically need their hair cut every 2-4 weeks depending on the breed of the dog and the style of the cut.

This task is often best left to professional groomers, though many dog owners are able to learn some basic maintenance haircuts.

Function or Fashion: How to Choose A Harness

Our dogs are members of our families. We want them to feel wonderful and look great – at home and out on the town.

Most vets are now recommending harnesses, instead of collars. But there are a gazillion different kinds of harnesses – how do you know which is best for your pup? So be sure to consider all the features you may require.

Just by choosing a harness, you’re already taking a positive step in protecting your dog’s health.

For a proper fit: Measure your dog’s girth (all the way around) just behind his front legs.

Step-in harnesses are rapidly becoming dog owners’ favorites. Step-ins are easy to use, choke-free, adjustable, comfortable for most dogs and come in a variety of patterns and sizes.

Standard (or Roman) harnesses. The Roman Harness slips over the dog’s head, one leg goes into the “armhole,” the bottom strap is brought around and buckled. There’s no more fumbling to align the buckle and strap.

Vest-type harnesses. The vest-type harness is exploding in popularity for good reason – no pressure on your dog’s neck. The D-ring for the leash is on the dog’s back, far away from the dog’s vulnerable throat.
